Election in the Great White North

An American friend asked if our PM Stephen Harper was thrown out of office. I had to think about my response to her question for 24 hours and then I explained that some political maneuvering caused Harper to call and election.

Usually Canadian elections are pretty staid and you can call the winner out weeks in advance. But this election has proven to be anything but stale. Harper, like everyone else, is on the elusive hunt for the majority of the House of Commons. His competition, Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff, thought that Canadians were sick of Harper's authoritarian attitude and ditch the current PM. Ignatieff thought wrong and now is barely holding on to third place. NDP leader Jack Layton, injecting the charisma that Harper and Ignatieff lack is in a surprising second place. I'm watching this election closely. I will admit I voted for Harper. He could lose the secretive attitude and learn to break out a smile. I just have to look at the US and realize that I would rather have stability than radical change. I will keep you posted.
